Tournament Recap: Week 1

August 23, 2021 1:40 PM | Anonymous member (Administrator)

The Singles Tournament started off with a wash-out on Thursday August 19th. It rained the entire day and no tennis was played at any point in the day. On Friday at 5pm, things got underway for the Men’s and Women’s Singles.

This year, the Men’s A Singles bracket saw great turnout with 12 players to start. Chris Stevens and Sam Gains, last year’s finalists, got a bye for the quarter finals, along with Andy Glanz who advanced automatically after Andrew Pearce withdrew due to injury. The question on the table remained, would Sam and Chris make it to the finals, as they did last year, for a re-match?

Men's A Opening Round:

On Court 1, James Knittle advanced to the second round with a third set tiebreaker after splitting sets with Rick Barnett (6-2, 3-6, 10-8). On Court 2, Ted Thorndike advanced over Bo Graves 6-1, 6-2. On Court 8, Mike Carey advanced 6-2, 6-2 over George Gay. And Joel Furey advanced 6-2, 6-0 over Jean Drolet.

The losers from this round were invited to join Round Robin for the B Singles title.

Men's Quarterfinals:

On Court 5, Chris Stevens advanced to the quarter finals in a tight match against Mike Carey. After swapping sets 6-4, 4-6, Chris won in the tiebreaker 10-7. On Court 2, James Knittle overtook Joel Furey 6-1, 6-3. On Court 4, Eli Mihan advanced over Ted Thorndike 6-3, 6-2. On Court 3, Sam Gaines advanced over Andy Glanz 6-1, 6-4.

The men’s semi finals were canceled Saturday and postponed until Sunday morning afternoon due to a sudden and heavy downpour.

Women's A Singles Round Robin:

The Women's A Singles, with just 4 entrants, ran a round robin on Friday afternoon with a best of 6 games format. Erika Goss led the charge with 10 game wins, and there was a tie between Charlotte Stevens and Mary Wylde for 9 game wins, and Julia Biederman wrapped up with 8 games. Mary and Charlotte battled it out in an intense tie breaker to see which player would advance to the finals with Erika.

The Women’s Final with Mary Wylde and Erika Goss will be held on Tuesday the 24th at 5:30pm on Court 1.

Men's A Semi-Finals:

Getting an early start Sunday morning, the men’s semi-final round took to courts 2 and 4 at 8:30am. Eli Mihan and Sam Gaines were first to finish, with a grueling and intense first set (7-5, Sam) and a relatively quick second set (6-1, Sam) for Sam to advance to the finals. Battling a 3rd set in the heat and humidity, Chris Stevens and James Knittle put on a nail biting show over the course of 3 hours of play. After losing the first set 1-6, Chris fought back to win the next two sets 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the finals.

The Men’s Final, a rematch between Chris Stevens and Sam Gaines, is scheduled to be held Thursday evening on Court 1.

Sunday morning also hosted the final of the Senior Men’s Singles, a showdown between Steve Edwards and Phil Scott. Much respect to this duo for a long and contentious match! Despite a great effort from Phil, Steve earned the title with a match score of 7-6, 6-4.

Men’s and Women’s B Round Robin:

Due to the small number of signups across both men and women’s B singles, our tournament director decided to run the B singles in a fun and competitive round robin format on Sunday afternoon at 2pm. Each tournament had four competitors and the matches were played in an 8-game format with no ad.

For the Men’s B, Alan Thorndike began the first round but retired early when Jean Drolet entered the round robin late. The action quickly heated up with Bo Graves and George Gay competing for the most games won. In the end, Bo’s strong serve and powerful forehand allowed him to secure the win with 16 games in total. George came in a close second with 15 games, with Jean Drolet and Max Biedermann with 10 and 7 games respectively.

For the Women’s B, a quick shout out to Lilli Biedermann for joining the round robin at the last minute to ensure an even number of entrants. It was a tight race to the top between Julia Biedermann’s powerful forehand and punishing serve versus Deb Schoepke’s incredible consistency, chasing down every ball. In the end, Julia wrapped things up with 18 games won to Deb’s 17. Olivia Stevens and Lilli Biedermann won 8 and 5 games respectively.

Congrats Bo Graves and Julia Biedermann for your B Singles titles!
